Just a month after President Donald J. Trump’s decisive victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Golda Och Academy students participated in Model Congress

Model Congress is an immersive simulation of the U.S. legislative process where students draft, debate and vote on legislation. This year saw added significance due to the unique politically charged timing of the event.
The event featured Party Platform Day at the Trenton Statehouse, where delegates from Republican, Democratic and Independent parties crafted their agendas.
For several seniors, this session marked their final Model Congress experience. Reflecting on his ongoing participation, Senior Austin Colm shared, "Model Congress has been a great way to make friends across the states. It's been a great way to network throughout high school and promote an intellectual debate."
Model Congress at Golda Och Academy offers more than just an extracurricular activity: it’s a hands-on educational experience that deepens students’ understanding of the United States government.
Freshman Levi Falkenstein explains, “Model Congress stood out from other clubs and trips at Golda Och Academy. I joined on my older brother’s recommendation without fully knowing what to expect, but by the end, I gained a deeper understanding of the process and enjoyed debating perspectives I can’t typically share in school.”
Party Platform Day allows students to explore different party platforms and align with values that resonate with them. Delegates collaborate to draft and vote on their party’s vision, laying the groundwork for potential legislation they might propose.
The process requires dedication and effort, but participants find it both rewarding and enjoyable.
Sophomore Alma Adiel said, “The trip to Trenton was an educational and interesting way to understand different perspectives for modern everyday issues. I enjoyed having the opportunity to explore different parties and formulate my own opinions. It also provided a space for me to explore stretching my own perspectives”.
This year, the Republican Committee room grew, with an emphasis on their platform to better align with President Donald J. Trump's Agenda 47 and prevailing right-wing views. In contrast, the Democrats maintained their focus, such as shifting from deportation to increased border security, a stance championed by their 2024 nominee and former Vice President Kamala Harris, whom former President Joseph Biden appointed to oversee border matters.
As the senior class departs, the upcoming Model Congress trip in February enters a transformative phase. The program’s future now hinges on the active participation and leadership of dedicated freshmen and sophomores, who will spearhead meaningful legislative debates and initiatives.
