By Caleb Lebeau ‘27 Almost every week, Israeli citizens are being attacked in the streets of their own country. Recently, a terrorist was killed by a citizen present with a licensed weapon, after the terrorist continuously stabbed and wounded multiple innocent Israeli citizens. The terrorist was said to have been a 19-year-old residing in Israel illegally. After the attack, a 30-year-old man with serious stab wounds was rushed to a nearby hospital and operated on. Later, it was reported that he was in stable condition. According to the Jerusalem Post, a friend of the victim said, “My friend was stabbed right in front of me. We were sitting in a café, and the incident happened at the end of the street.”
Events like this cause serious trauma for those who are watching as well as the victims of the attack. These attacks create constant paranoia for those who live in Israel, as they have to face the fear of being harmed in their own homeland any day and at any time. Another recent attack occurred in Tel Aviv when a US green card holder stabbed four local Israelis. All of the victims survived, some with major wounds and others with minor injuries. This terrorist was also quickly shot and killed on the scene. An article regarding this attack in the New York Post reads, “Kaddi, who held a US permanent resident card, had entered Israel on Jan.18 with a tourist visa, Israeli officials said.” While Israel’s security has improved since October 7th, terrorists continue to enter the country and cause havoc on the city streets. Sophomore Violet Berman says, “I think that all Israelis should be able to live peacefully in their own homes. I can’t imagine waking up every day having to worry about being attacked on the streets of my city. It hurts to know this is the reality for many in Israel.” Another brutal accident occurred on a late Sunday afternoon on the busy streets of Tel Aviv. A truck crashed into a bus stop where 40 people were standing, critically injuring ten civilians. It was later reported that one of the injured victims died in the hospital where he was taken to be treated after the accident. The Jerusalem Post quoted Tel Aviv police saying that civilians who were on the scene had shot at the truck driver in an attempt to stop him. The driver was said to have been a Palestinian from northern Tel Aviv. An Aljazeera article regarding this attack mentioned, “The police initially framed it as a terror attack. But now they have changed their line, saying the matter is still under investigation” as it is often difficult to find the cause for these attacks. However, since October 7th, most instances like this have been deemed terror attacks due to the rise in hatred towards Israel and Jews in the Middle East.
