For decades, the Russian government has exerted its power over its citizens, and just this year, those injustices have been further demonstrated through its treatment of Alexei Navalny. Navalny, an anti-corruption activist and Russian opposition leader, has been persecuted by the Russian government, with Vladamir Putin himself leading the charge. Many murder attempts have been made against Navalny, the most prominent of which was poisoning using the nerve agent, Novichok. Novichok is a chemical weapon developed during the Soviet-era that slows the heart and deteriorates muscles used for breathing and is known by its creators as the deadliest nerve agent ever created.

On Feb. 1, the military in Myanmar, led by Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, seized control of the democratic government in a coup d’etat. In November, Myanmar, also known as Burma, conducted a general election in which leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy party won in a landslide victory. By Talia Perlstein ‘24
When Biden became president, he proclaimed that he had big plans for his first 100 days in office. Biden wanted to undo many of the actions Trump had enacted as president, as well as implement new reforms. As Biden’s time as president has just begun, he’s already taken significant steps towards doing just that. Emily Schall ‘22
Just as the United States hits its one-year mark since COVID-19 began, a new variant of the virus was discovered. Information regarding the new strand is limited but experiments and testing are underway to help answer the world’s questions. “Scientists are working to learn more about how easily they spread, whether they could cause more severe illness, and whether currently authorized vaccines will protect people against them,” the Center for Disease Control reported. |
