In an effort to rebrand the company, CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, announced on Thursday, October 28, that the company is changing its name to Meta. The Metaverse is a future virtual reality social network designed to build a new type of online interaction using avatars that allow users to play games, watch movies and even attend concerts.

After over four decades, the Afghan refugee crisis is one of the largest and most long lasting mass displacements in the world with a total of six million Afghans affected. This year, Afghans are being displaced more than ever before due to the outbreak of violence prompted by the Taliban’s overthrow of the elected Afghan government, and subsequent attacks by ISIS-K against the Taliban. Just as the world hoped to see the light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, a new wave of Coronavirus, called the Omicron variant, took the world by storm. While much remains unknown about this variant at press time, it reminds many of our recent troubles with the Delta variant, a mutation that proved even more dangerous and contagious than the original strain. This year's hurricane season was a difficult one. In late August, exactly 16 years after Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans as a Category four, eventually causing over 60 deaths, $19 billion worth of damage and weeks-long power outages. Ida wreaked havoc along the Easten Seaboard, hitting New Jersey and New York especially hard, with major local damage in towns surrounding GOA. By Daniel Shapiro’23
