By Hannah Stoch ‘22

Most publications, including previous issues of the Flame, use the term anti-Semitism when referring to hatred towards Jews. However, removing the hyphen, a simple change in syntax, allows the word to more concretely refer to the prejudice Jews face.
This issue was first brought to my attention by the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish organization dedicated to fighting antisemitism and other forms of mistreatment. In a short article on their website, they explain that “there is no such thing as a Semitic peoplehood.”

How Donald Trump’s Harsh Rhetoric has Created a New America

By Eliana Finkel ‘24

When former President Donald Trump ran for president, his platform undermined people in this country based on religion, race and sexuality. Many thought that someone with as many authoritarian tendencies as Trump would never win. Yet he did, and the tone changed to being hopeful that he would behave differently while in the White House.
“Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t. And the consequences of that failure are severe,” stated Barack Obama, who, unfortunately, has been proven right. The tactics and hyperbole that Trump used to secure the position of President remained once in office. As President, these actions have a significant and lasting impact on America.

By Daniel Shapiro ‘23

Today’s world is gripped by a very real climate crisis, one that is affecting almost every aspect of life. This is a crisis that needs to be taken seriously by our regulatory bodies of government, but yet, it isn’t.
On Dec. 8, the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) voted to confirm the Delaware River Partners LLC’s application to build a second pier on the river. It will be used to ferry dangerous and explosive liquid natural gas, (LNG) through populated parts of Pennsylvania.

By Talia Perlstein ‘24

The All Lives Matter movement has been on the rise currently with a hidden purpose of lessening the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Following the murder of George Floyd in May, Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and movements have risen across the country to spread awareness of the systemic racism to which black people are subjected. However, in response to this movement, the All Lives Matter (ALM) movement is rising and growing at a fast pace.

The concept of gender has been prominent in the media recently.
Specifically, the gender binary, the rigid system of having two genders, has been making headlines. Contrary to popular belief, this binary system is not necessarily found within human anatomy. Cultures all over the world developed different systems of gender completely unrelated to the rigid dichotomy we use today. However, colonizers persecuted these nations and silenced their cultures.
Jewish law bases its ideas on sex rather than gender and includes different types of intersex people in those customs. Although Hebrew is a binary system with male and female language, Jewish law describes several sexes.

By Mimi Lebeau ‘24

Cancel culture is harmful to influencers’ and celebrities’ mental health and careers, and although its original intent was noble, it has become completely toxic.
Cancel culture is a growing phenomenon in which people are criticized and harassed for actions deemed inappropriate or hurtful. It began gaining traction in recent years and has been especially prominent on YouTube, TikTok, Twitter and other social media platforms. What makes these places home to this phenomenon is that users can speak out against influencers anonymously with no consequences.
