I often think about how to communicate the idea of color to a blind person. Comparison or examples are useless, seeing as how they don’t know anything about the examples I’m using. Descriptive language also fails; words simply aren’t good enough to describe visuals. Ruben (Riz Ahmed), the main character of “Sound of Metal”, understands this as it pertains to sound. A heavy metal drummer and recovering drug addict, his surprisingly harmonic world is thrown into chaos when he loses his hearing after a particularly loud show. The film makes clear that the anger Ruben expresses in his drumming is the only way he can live so peacefully; the stunning contrast between his concerts and morning routine is almost comedic.

“I can’t breathe,” three all too familiar words, were cried out over twenty-five times and, eventually, heard around the world. These words ingrained the memory of George Floyd into our minds, a new murder in American history. In 2020, after the infamous video of Floyd’s killing surfaced, millions took to the streets in protest of his murder. Worldwide, people had access to his last nine minutes. All through the summer of 2020 until this day, their fight for justice has not ceased; the anger and frustration they felt came from a place of overwhelming fear that this might happen to them, or to someone they love. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, hate crimes against marginalized groups have skyrocketed, with some of the most significant impacts left on the Asian-American and Black communities. With the increase of hate crimes comes an increase in collective societal knowledge of systemic racism. But one racist stereotype that continues to be prevalent in our society, and is slowly becoming a more prominent concern, is the model minority myth. By Mimi Lebeau ‘24
In the age of internet activism, it is simple to spread awareness of pressing issues online. As beneficial as this is, it often forces activists and other social media users to compete with one another to have their voices heard. In doing so, some, almost always non-Jews, compare situations even remotely suppressive, to the Holocaust, attracting attention through extreme hyperbole. This may not seem harmful, as these activists are merely using a past tragedy to seemingly help prevent another from persisting. However, these comparisons undermine the actual suffering and death that occurred during World War II. By Chloe Elder ‘24
“One Direction” formed on July 23, 2010, during season seven of reality television show the “X Factor.” The band consisted of five members: Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan. During their time together, they released five albums and went on four world tours. Yet despite their massive success, on March 25, 2015, Malik left the band and started his solo career. Later that year, One Direction announced its hiatus, and the band officially split in January 2016. Members promised a reunion after 18 months, but when nothing happened, fans remained devastated. On One Direction’s tenth anniversary, fans hoped for a reunion. However, many wondered if it was the right decision once their poor treatment by management came to light. |
