American Military Shoots Down Chinese Spy Balloon

Earlier this winter, the United States shot down a large Chinese spy balloon that was first spotted flying over Montana in late February.
Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, the relationship between China and the U.S. has been one of mutual distrust in an ever-changing diplomatic battle. Despite efforts in the late 20th century to mend disputes between the two nations, these relations have soured in recent years.
The Biden administration has condemned China for its genocide against its Uyghur population, its poor treatment of Hong Kong and cyber warfare against the United States. Recently, however, the appearance of this balloon has affected not only governmental relations and economics, but national security.
Countless American citizens were enraged at the inert government for not shooting down the balloon immediately, with Senator John Hawley (R-MO) tweeting, “SHOOT IT DOWN,” alongside other criticisms and mockeries on social media.
Finally, days later, off the coast of South Carolina, the US government shot down the balloon. Since then, there have been 3 other balloon sightings, and despite speculation that they are not all from China, America has been left in shock.
The Chinese government has denied accusations of espionage, stating the balloons were for meteorological purposes and that they had simply blown off course. However, the American government disagreed with the Chinese, stating that it was collecting data as it flew above the United States.
When questioned about diplomatic relations, President Biden affirmed that, “We are not looking for a new Cold War, but I make no apologies… and we will compete and we will responsibly manage that competition so that it does not veer into conflict.”
Although this situation appears tense, many believe that there is no need for panic or distress. “[The situation] with China is tense right now, [but the balloons are] ultimately not a real danger and not the real focus of our friction with China,” said social studies and government teacher Mr. Ober. “The US is doing all the right things now, signaling our displeasure, reducing our trade with China.”
