Hollywood actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are entering their second month in a Virginia courthouse, continuing their prolonged legal entanglement. Depp and Heard, a former married couple, have both accused the other of domestic abuse, leaving the jury to wonder who to believe.
Depp and Heard were married from 2015 to 2016, with Heard eventually filing for divorce. Soon after, she wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post expressing her experiences as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” While Depp's name was never directly mentioned, it was heavily implied.
“All allegations like these have to be taken seriously and any other route than a court case would have been wrong if both sides continue to stand their ground,” commented Sophomore Aliza Bieber. “These court cases are such high stakes that any mistake or lie made is so damaging,”
On May 4th, 2022 Heard testified that she had taken a vacation to the Bahamas, in 2015, with Depp’s children. Heard said that the two of them had spoken about their relationship, and “mutually” agreed that they should divorce. She claimed to also give reference to every single time she was abused, referring to her injuries as “a weighted ball” she could not hold onto much longer.
Depp has made similar allegations, claiming Heard routinely hit and bullied him throughout their time together.
With the claimant and defendant both being high-profile celebrities, this court case has also heavily engaged social media speculation over the trial’s outcome. While it is unclear what the case’s end will be, people are anxiously anticipating that end, especially Depp and Heard.
