Trump Investigators Focus on Seized Documents

Classified documents seized from former President Donald Trump’s Florida home are currently under review by US intelligence officials to determine if they hold a national security risk.
This investigation comes after a federal appeal to acquire the documents, with the Supreme Court delivering the Department of Justice (DOJ) a unanimous decision, blocking lower-court rulings.
The documents seized are currently under two different types of review, says Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines. The first examines the classification of the seized documents, while the second, if the documents were improperly enclosed, determines any national security fallout. This comes after a federal three-judge panel reversed major elements of past rulings by South Florida District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, and ruled that both reviews may continue.
Cannon’s original verdict gave Trump permission to have a “special master” analyze the classified documents and separate privileged material, also prohibiting the DOJ from using some documents that could help the investigation. However, Cannon stated that her decision should not prevent the national security reviews from moving forward.
Yet many prosecutors stated that Cannon’s order was unworkable, since the FBI, which issued the search warrant at Donald Trump’s estate, is a key member of the intelligence community.
Cannon’s reasoning was ultimately dismissed by the panel and supported the Department of Justice’s assurance that criminal review of the records was a viable part of determining the damage done to national security, meaning prosecutors were therefore able to use many classified documents as part of the criminal investigation.
The investigation aims to determine the potential risk to national security, although the assessment was put on pause due to further consultations with the Justice Department following Cannon’s initial ruling and statement.
For the time being, any information from the Justice Department’s investigation and all related information on the Mar-a-Lago documents have not been shared with Congress, as intelligence briefings for congressional leaders were also put on hold after Cannon’s ruling.
This information was revealed in a highly redacted document that outlines the Justice Department's reasons for seeking a search warrant for Trump’s home. At the moment, the DOJ must make sure that nothing was leaked or compromised before it can continue investigating the significance of the documents and their implications to national security.
