Take a Stand Against Antisemitism

As we enter the new year, antisemitism seems to have become the new norm. Between the horrific words of Kanye West, the scary ideals of Kyrie Irving and the brutal physical and mental attacks on Jews worldwide every day, I feel fearful and helpless.
Our generation continues to be extremely active in combating social injustice, and it is imperative that we take a stand as a community. The question is, how? Thankfully, modern technology, the same tool commonly used to spread hate, can help us, as Jews, to demonstrate our support for our community and stamp it out.
Kanye West’s large platform is the prime reason his words have spread so quickly and been detrimental to the Jewish community. Yet while he may have more followers and a larger fanbase, together, using our voices, we can make a change.
Social media is the most efficient way to spread ideas; much of today’s fake news is shared through the internet, so we must use the same tactics to help promote peace. As Kanye and many others have demonstrated, social media can be used to spread hateful messages. However, when wielded appropriately, social platforms can be a beautiful way to spread kindness, faith and hope.
As teenagers, we have so much knowledge and experience with the internet, skills that can be utilized positively. “Teens can use social media to spread awareness and educate themselves online through credible sources. It is important to recognize teens have a voice too, and can help create effective change,” said sophomore Jesse Schiffman, emphasizing this idea.
We need to come together as a community and spread a positive message. We must reach out to those close to us who have those significant connections and can employ their platforms to increase support for the cause.
The only way to spread the message is to talk to others, get the word out and publicize it. It is one thing to post on social media, but it is another to receive recognition. Whether sending newsletters or organizing community discussions, social media is not the only outlet to broaden one’s support system. Ensuring that those around you know the current crisis Jews face or recruiting friends to help destigmatize the hate surrounding Judaism is needed, whether through social media or not.
A singular individual cannot combat all the hate in the world. Change can only be accomplished when we listen to one another and share our thoughts and feelings. We are stronger together and must work as a community to stop the rapid spread of hatred.
