The LGBTQ+ and Allies Club was brought back to GOA this year. Restarted by senior Hayley Lampert, the club explores LGBTQ+ issues and supports students, making change at GOA. “A student who is questioning their sexuality or gender identity may very likely feel alone and not well supported,” Lampert said. “Because coming out is such a big thing for so many people, it is critical to have a place in this community for that person to feel 100% safe in, so that they can realize who they really are in a stress free and happy manner.”

For GOA’s winter 2020-2021 theater production, student actors had to make many changes to adapt their performances for COVID-19 restrictions. An inter-school performance of Don Zolidis’ “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon: Stay-at-Home Edition” was filmed on Zoom calls and phones to be edited rather than performed live like every year before. “Working on the play this year was a great experience. It was pretty hard, especially because the connections made between actors during their performances were not being produced,” sophomore Sophie Fischer said. “But I was still able to do what I love, and I am really proud of the amount of work we’ve all done. We’ve had meetings over Zoom as a cast, private recording sessions with equipment ourselves and families set up and socially distant recordings with our scene partners.” By Giselle Weiss ‘24
During the pandemic, fashion has evolved quickly. Looking back, fashion was completely different just a year or two ago. Many people wore skinny jeans or leggings and sweatshirts on a daily basis with little individuality. This year, however, students add their personalities to their outfits and dress in their own unique way. “I think my style has become a lot more personalized to what I like compared to last year when it was more basic,” freshman Mimi Lebeau said. This school year has been anything but normal, especially for Nurse Ilena, who has been working tirelessly to ensure everyone is able to attend school in-person and safely. “This process started very early,” Nurse Ilena said. “As soon as school was closed back in March as we transitioned to a remote focus.” The nurse spent long hours working with the CDC NJ Department of Health, as well as the West Orange Department of Health in order to ensure a return to school in the fall. This winter former One Direction star Harry Styles announced that he would be gracing the cover of “Vogue” magazine in a dress from Gucci’s “Fall ‘20 Runway” collection. Naturally this stirred up a heated debate on whether or not his attire was appropriate. Styles has continuously expressed his traditionally feminine side during his career by painting his nails, wearing stereotypically feminine jewelry and even rocking a dress, catching the attention of many people who believe that “real men” should not dress this way. |
